No Increase in Employment in August

The U.S. Department of Labor reported today that nonfarm payroll employment failed to increase in August (see graph).

During the June-August period, employment growth averaged 35,000 jobs per month, only one-fourth of the number that is needed to prevent continued decline in employment as a percentage of the population.
